fun at the met: roxy paine maelstrom & vermeer

*
last week i went to check out the roxy paine maelstrom sculpture on the roof at the met. maelstrom is one of paine's dendroids sculptures which are "based on systems such as vascular networks, tree roots, industrial piping, and fungal mycelia." the park and midtown background for the sculpture were outstanding. doesn't it look like the terminator (robert patrick's terminator 2) turned into a crazed, aggressive tree?

i also visited the vermeer exhibit (again). i had foolishly tried to see this exhibit on a sunday afternoon earlier in september, possibly the biggest mistake, ever. it was still crowded, but not intolerable.

vermeer's masterpiece the milkmaid
sept 10 - nov 29th

i've seen the milkmaid painting in it's home, the rijksmuseum, a few years ago. it's just one of those paintings that's always worth seeing again. arguably one of vermeer's most popular paintings, this piece absolutely requires the viewer to see it in person. there's no way that a print or photo can do it justice. the detail, composition, and especially lighting within the piece are truly exquisite. my favourite part? the bread on the table. no, i'm not joking.

the pointelles detail on the table items (especially the bread) is amazing. if you are in the city, you *must* go see it.
